Information Literacy Research Skills
Technology coaches may be tasked by administrators to help teachers and students understand information literacy and the online research process. This includes grade appropriate strategies for research as well as techniques for evaluating the quality and credibility of online resources. Legal and ethical practices, such as copyright and fair use, need to be understood by technology coaches who provide resources that support teacher and student understanding.
It is the beginning of the school year and your principal has asked you to prepare a 3-5 minute video to share with teachers focusing on information literacy research skills and emphasizing the ethics of grade appropriate research. In your video, address the following:
Activities for students to discover accurate, relevant, and quality information on the Internet. Provide at least one activity that is appropriate for each grade range K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.
Strategies for teachers to support students who are struggling to critically examine the quality of online media sources. Provide at least one strategy that is appropriate for each grade range K-3, 4-8, and 9-12.
Techniques for evaluating the quality and credibility of online resources.
Copyright and fair use policy in education as they apply to both students and parents.
At least two supports for educators to use when critically examining sources of online media.
Support your video presentation with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
Submit the scholarly resources and video link in one document. Ensure that others can access and view the link to your narrated digital presentation prior to submission.
Remember that video and audio quality are important and should be taken into consideration. Ensure your video is filmed with sufficient lighting and that the volume is adequate for viewers to hear. Intonation, expression, proper speech, and professional attire are expected.
Refer to “Recording, Editing, and Uploading a Video or Podcast” and use an online video platform such as Zoom, Loom, YouTube, or Vimeo to upload your completed video. If you upload your video to YouTube, select the “unlisted” option. Ensure that others can access and view your linked video prior to submission.
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success enter.
This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
