I have worked as a Learning Support Educator for the past four years, mainly with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). I have experienced many challenges and issues, mostly from teachers who do not differentiate their teaching so that students with ASD can be included in mainstream education. Some teachers do not believe ASD students may need an adaptive curriculum rather than a one-size-fits-all strategy. The main aim of this study is to describe how children with autism spectrum disorder are included or to what extent these students are included in the mainstream classroom, any possible barriers that children could face and what strategies and resources are used for effective inclusion.
This study will debate how children with ASD are included or to what extent they are included during class and social activities. Children with autism, particularly those with challenging behaviour, are still not fully included in our education system. Moreover, this study will also focus on the barriers children with ASD face in mainstream schools and practical strategies teachers should implement for successful inclusion.
Literature Review –
