Specifically, for this exercise, you need to compare the business environment for any TWO countries of the countries listed above, covering parts “a”, “b”, and “c” of the essay – see below:
a). Use the Packenham Model to assess prospects for sustaining current market-oriented reforms, and/or taking them further, in TWO of the following: Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and Chile. (For this, you must provide examples and evidence to support your assessment.) Do this using all four factors of the model for both countries.
b. Assess prospects for BARGAINING by the company with the host country government and/or prospective joint venture partner. Here, you might refer to points discussed in class, such as “obsolescing bargain”, the importance of the federal structure of a country, the level of technology in the project, etc.
c. Discuss any “other factors” that might be relevant. This would include such things as relative market size (you don’t need to memorize names and dates, but it would be useful to know relative population size of the countries you are comparing), prospects for financial crisis (Nelson Model might be relevant to mention here – along with different policies in the two countries); relevant free trade agreements; cultural factors; geographic factors; good locations for a plant within the country; demographics (young population?), etc.
