Essay Primer
The readings and assignments throughout this Identity chapter/module ask you to examine our cultural assumptions about identity. The primary questions we are tasked to answer are: (a) what makes us who we are and (b) how is identity a negotiation between personal choice and larger cultural forces?
Use any of the readings/assignments we explored in this module in any combination to answer the prompt, but please make your answer to the question logical, organized, and well supported by the materials you choose.
Essay At-A-Glance
For our first assignment, we will focus on developing our academic reading and writing skills by creating a definition. To create our definition, we will use our personal experiences and what we have learned about the concept of identity in this unit.
Goals
Create a strong definition of the concept identity.
Identify meaningful examples from class materials that support your definition.
Explain how the examples support your definition.
Prompt
Compose an essay of 1,000 words defining the concept identity. In your definition, make sure to include examples that help the reader understand your definition and descriiptive language to help your reader see what you mean.
Notes
Use the strategies provided in the lectures to create your body paragraphs. Your first body paragraph may compare your definition to a definition presented to you in our class materials. Your second and possibly third body paragraphs must use one or more references from our work together–i.e., videos, lectures, readings, class conversations, etc.
Your essay must be 1,000 words, and your word count must be included at the end of your essay. Failure to include your word count automatically deducts 10% from your final rubric score.
If you do not meet the required word count, your highest possible grade is determined by dividing the actual word count by the required word count.
Actual word count: 700; Required word count: 1,000. 700/1,000 = 70.
If your original score for the essay is 10/10, your revised grade would be 7/10.
If your original score for the essay is 9/10, your revised score would be 6/10.
Do not exceed 1,200 words. If you exceed 1,250 words, your essay may be returned.
For this essay, you may use personal examples for your concrete details. This means you will need to use the first person pronouns (I, me, my), but do not use the second person pronouns (you, your, yours).
Follow all MLA 8 guidelines for citations and formatting. If you are unfamiliar with MLA 8, you may use this template.
