Should not be written in an essay format. Whole sentences and paragraphs are required where word counts are given, you can arrange your written response with headers and do not need to make formal transitions between the responses to each task.
Write thorough responses to the following questions.
Task 1: Identify two specific technologies (be specific – for example, “facial recognition” or “algorithms” are not specific technology but a particular database, a camera, a named particular algorithm, etc are) that exist within this case study. For each technology, identify two different technological affordances that exist for different people, organizations, or institutions under different conditions. These should be people, organizations, or institutions you described as stakeholders. (Bulleted list is acceptable)
stakeholders choose from following list
1. Technology Company (SoundThinking)
2. Law Enforcement Agencies (e.g., Chicago Police Department)
3. Community Members (Residents of ShotSpotter-Enabled Areas)
4. Civil Rights Organizations (e.g., ACLU, MacArthur Justice Center)
5. Media and Journalists
Task 2: Explain each affordance (make sure you use affordance verb language – what particular action does the technology request, demand, encourage, discourage, refuse, or allow?) for the type of person, organization, or institution you’ve identified and clearly articulate the conditions under which this affordance works or doesn’t work. Be as specific! (400-500 words)
Task 3: Identify parts of the system that have been black boxed and explain how this part of the system can be identified as a black box. What process is being obscured within the system? What data go into the black box and what data are returned from the black box? Which people, organizations, or institutions have access to understand this part of the system better? Which people, organizations, or institutions do not have a means to understand this part of the system better? (150words)
