This paper will be 8 pages double-spaced. It needs to be non-partisan and use two of Adam Smith’s books, The Wealth of Nations and His Theory of Moral Sentiments. Other books to use are How The West Grew Rich by Nathan Rosenberg and Development as Freedom by Amartya Sen. You should also find scholarly research that pertains as closely to this subject as you can. Leave whatever personal feelings you have toward Middle East Politics out of this. Write from the lens of what the Palestinian Government and People need to do differently. Not Israel, Egypt, etc. Use whatever sources I provide and others that you find. Topics to mention but not be limited to:
1. The terrible October 7th attack on Israel and Its Consequences
2. Democratically elected Hamas leadership, which prioritizes the goals of their Militia rather than the advancement of its citizens and their basic needs
3. Change the media and education to de-militarize the population and its youth.
4. Hamas stealing large sums of Humanitarian aid from it’s citizens to build tunnels, bombs, and buy weapons
5. The lack of collective goals toward peace among the people, which is super important to the cohesiveness of a population and its ability to grow economically
6. Peace Talks with Saudi Arabia and Israel to elect new leadership without corruption
7. Hamas destroyed Green houses and other infrastructure left by Israel after it pulled it’s citizens out of Palestinian territory that could’ve been used by the people
Here is some outline:
paragraph 1: Overview of Smith’s model of a commercial society from Wealth of Nations
paragraph 2: High unemployment, non-feudalistic but lacks “love” and interaction, improper use of foreign aid. Freedom, democracy, investment into infrastructure, create more jobs, people can exchange and be less dependent, temporary changes facilitated by Saudi Arabia or others, cut ties with Iran, build trade and immigration relations with Egypt and Israel
Paragraph 3: applying model of a commercial society to Israel and it’s development, social cohesion
Paragraph 4: Contrast with Palestine’s lack of mirroring the directives of Smith, instead choosing to invest funds into warfare and terrorism, away from the public common interest. Electing terrorists and hostile leadership. Refusal of peace. Misuse of funds/investment in military as opposed to public infrastructure supportive of economic growth and national development
Paragraph 5: P5: Palestinian reforms to strive towards Smith’s model, long-term goals of independence, democracy, economic growth, and influence in international trade scheme, brief overview of P6-8
Paragraph 6: Reforming education- attention to media, shifting mindset of younger generations away from antisemitism, violence, martyrdom
Paragraph 7: Political reform: Foreign administration of safe and fair election to achieve democratic representation of the people, improved tolerance (religion), and reduced need to dominate
Paragraph 8: Improved public infrastructure- access to housing, food, water, medicine, education, transportation
Paragraph 9: Social cohesion as means for development in Palestine: internal cohesion can lead to external advantage via trade and exchange
Paragraph 10: Relationship between Israel and Palestine: applying Smith’s Moral Precepts of Nature internally and externally to improve relations: building internal cohesion and international tolerance and trade advantage- participation in global economy
Paragraph 11: Conclusion: restatement of thesis and establishment of relevance
