Connect to Prior Experience
Last week you read about theories.
1) Without using your book, recall the identifying principles of key learning theories.

How did you do?
From your Textbook
“Every teacher can become a child advocate and demonstrate the vital importance of care and education for young children and families (Gordon & Browne, 2016, p. 105)”.
2) On page 105, the authors describe advocacy. List the recommendations in accepting to be an advocate. Next to each recommendation, write what that actually looks like.
3) Describe essential attributes of the early childhood profession in terms of personality, education, cultural competency, and ethical conduct (a full paragraph for each).
4) Review the Code of Ethical Conduct in Appendix A. What Ethical Code (be specific) is being broken for the following situations? How can each situation be resolved?
When parents:
Attempt to gossip with you about another child, family, or staff member.
Insist on you telling them who bit their child.
When a teacher:
Refuses to take a turn cleaning out the animal cages
Regularly misses staff meetings
When the administrator:
Insists on adding one more child to a full class
Backs a parent who complains about a teacher without hearing the teacher’s side of the story
5) On page 117 of your textbook, reflect on Diversity Check Your Lenses! It is easy for us to misinterpret behavior and see a child through the wrong lens. We may see the child as clingy, when the child just doesn’t feel well. We may view the child as aggressive, when she does not know how to enter play with others. Share a time when you misinterpreted the actions of a child or if someone else did. What do you currently do to prevent yourself from looking at a child with the wrong lens?
