Consider the following hypothetical scenario:
A parent of a 2-year-old child na

Consider the following hypothetical scenario:
A parent of a 2-year-old child named Eliza asks a behavior analyst to help reduce the frequency of Eliza’s tantrumming. The behavior analyst begins a functional assessment of the target behavior by interviewing the parent and developing an operational definition of a tantrum. The definition is that “Eliza falls on the floor, screams loudly, and hits anyone who touches her.” Based on an interview, scatterplot recording, and ABA recording, the behavior analyst finds out that Eliza is most likely to engage in tantrumimg (1) during the hour before nap time or bed time, or when she misses a nap, (2) when it has been at least 2 hours since a meal or snack, (3) when she is asked to transition from a preferred activity to a nonpreffered activity, (4) when she has not received attention from her parent for at least 15 minutes, (5) when her parent has just told her “no” to a request, and (6) when her parent speaks to her in a very loud voice (i.e., yells), The behavior analyst also observes that her tantrums are followed by parental attention 100% of the time, escape from a demand 80% of the time, and access to a tangible item (e.g., a snack or toy) 60% of the time.
Use the scenario to answer the following questions:
What is the behavior targeted for intervention?
What are at least 3 antecedent-based strategies (i.e., interventions that are carried out BEFORE and INDEPENDENTLY of the occurrence of a target behavior) that the behavior analyst might suggest to the parent to help reduce the problem behavior? Answers may vary, but you must be sure to explain your rationale for each intervention you suggest.
Is it necessary and/or helpful to know the function of the target behavior in order to identify antecedent strategies that may help reduce the problem behavior? Why or why not? (Hint: Consider the different kinds of antecedent strategies explained by Cooper et al. (2020) in Chapter 26, starting on p.615.)
