Imagine that you are a licensed clinical social worker with a specialization in family therapy. You have been working with the Perez family, a Latin American family, for 6 months. The family comprises Jose, the 35-year-old father; Suzanne, the 34-year-old mom; Jack, the eldest son; Kale, the middle child; and Marco, the youngest son. The purpose of the therapy centers on the difference in parenting styles expressed by Jose and Suzanne. Jose subscribes to a hands-on and aggressive form of discipline, while Suzanne believes that discussions and consequences for actions (that is, taking away privileges in the home) is a more modern way to parent their three sons. In a recent family session, Kale shared that the pronoun he did not apply to himself. Kale said, “I am gender non-conforming.”
Based on Kale’s announcement in the session, how would you employ the strategies and training recommendations in this week’s readings to help support the Perez family? As you consider your approach, remember that the parenting style of each parent is markedly different.
