We have been considering a theory related to the topic of this ENG 112 section. To prepare for Essay 1, we need to be sure we have a solid understanding of that theory before we can “test” it by comparing it to a new body of evidence (the primary source). Then, we must take time to explore the various ways in which the theory and the primary source relate to one another. This assignment guides you through both of these critical thinking steps to help you develop ideas for your essay.
1. Write a short summary of the theory you will test in your essay. It may help to refer back to ENG111 “Assignment 1,” which includes guidelines on writing effective summaries, as you complete this part of the assignment.
2. Write one paragraph in which you explore how the primary source illustrates, demonstrates, or confirms one or more aspects of the theory. Try to refer to concrete evidence (examples, ideas, quotations, etc.) from both the theoretical text and the primary source as you develop your discussion
3. Next, write one paragraph in which you explore how the primary source complicates, challenges, or for some reason doesn’t quite fit with the ideas or approach of the theory. Be sure to use direct evidence from both the theoretical text and the primary source to develop your discussion, and don’t worry about contradicting what you might have written in the previous paragraph. Your goal is to explore different kinds connections, and it is OK (and interesting!) if your findings conflict in some way.
4. Write a paragraph in which you reflect on your findings, using the following questions as a guide: Did anything surprise you when you completed this exercise? Explain.
What were the main insights the theory gave you about the primary source? Why do you think you might not have realized these same things otherwise?
What were the most interesting tensions or questions that arose in this exercise, and why?
Generally speaking, how did this exercise help you see the sources in new ways?
