The music of the Baroque Era was hugely elaborate, with endlessly  intertwining competing melody lines and irregular phrasing. This is in  keeping with the ideals of exaggerated emotion and passionate expression  of the age. The Classical Era was a little bit different. This era was  heavily influenced by the ideals of the Enlightenment, which emphasized  reason and proportion in all things. In the Classical Era, the  perfection of music was found in the form, not individual  expression. This is why a lot of classical music sounds alike; the  structure was the most important element in the music.
Another was to think of it: watch the following clip regarding the Classical and Baroque style trends in art.

Using complete paragraphs, answer the following questions:
1. How does John Thornton describe the style characteristics of the  Classical era? How does this manifest in this era’s music? Use the  appropriate MR HIGS terminology in your answer (i.e., melodies favored  balanced, arching phrases, harmonies had purpose in establishing  tonality, etc.). Name at least 3 characteristics, each in its own sentence/paragraph.
2. How does John Thornton describe the style characteristics of the  Baroque era? How does this manifest in this era’s music? Use the  appropriate MR HIGS terminology in your answer (i.e., the da capo aria  form was exceptionally popular, the harpsichord was a favorite  instrument, etc.) Name at least 3 characteristics, each in its own sentence/paragraph.
3. If you were listening to an unfamiliar piece of music, what things  would you listen for to determine if it was a Baroque or Classical  work? Name at least 3 different clues, each in its own sentence/paragraph. (HINT: your answers to questions 1 and 2 may give you some help. Use them!)
