Jazz musicians often learn lots of songs that are considered “standards,” songs that you are just kind of expected to know. Many of these are songs from the “Great American Songbook;” these are often songs by writers from Tin Pan Alley or songs from Broadway musicals. But, every so often an original jazz tune catches on as one that everyone is expected to know. “Sandu” (by Clifford Brown [recorded in 1955]) and “Sister Sadie” (by Horace Silver [recorded in 1959]) are two of these “new” standards. Both are very clear examples of the hard-bop style.
