Topic:
American Literature is a humanities course. One of the purposes of humanities courses is to help us discover what it is to be human. In literature courses we get to see reflections of our own experience and get to vicariously experience what it is to be someone other than ourselves. Think back over the semester and choose one to three piece(s) of literature that spoke to you in a special way(s). Perhaps the work(s) reflected your own experience or the experience of someone you know or gave you a new perspective through which to view your own experience. Perhaps the work opened your eyes to the experience of someone other than yourself, causing you to feel compassion for someone else or another group of people. Perhaps the beauty of the author’s language spoke to you and caused a gut-wrenching reaction or brought tears to your eyes. Write an essay discussing the work(s) you chose and why the work(s) had the effect(s) it had on you.

Essay Organization
Your paper should have four parts: (See the sample paper for the format info.)

3.   Conclusion: Arrive at a conclusion—not simply a restatement—a statement resulting from the evidence.
4.   Works Cited Page listing the primary sources. Use alphabetical order per MLA.
