Within the context of the years 1860-1965 to what extent is it correct to claim that support of the presidents was the most important factor in advancing the civil rights of Black Americans in the USA? The text in red here is source information – noting that the source used for Lincoln is not a historian and needs changing. The exam board needs this source to be retained in the essay and for 3-4 sources to each have 300 words (clearly identified) as to its provenance and reliability (do not use the word ‘bias’ in this source evaluation!). This source could support or challenge the text – reinforcing the conclusion that I’m heading towards which is, despite war and activism playing direct (and indirect) parts in the progress of civil rights for black Americans in these years, the presidential action has been key if not vital to progress. The tutor suggests that the headings of the essay should be time periods under which presidents, war and activism is discussed – as opposed to those three topics forming the headings. I hope this is clear. Another helpful hint is to focus on what specific actions by presidents have resulted in the change needed (made change possible) – e.g. power of appointment, power to make executive orders. The red sources in the document should be retained – apart from the Lincoln source which is a college tutor source not a historian. Inline sources are fine.
