Instructions
Prepare for the assignment:
Review the Week 8 and 9 readings from your text.
Complete the Perceptions and Bias interactive media activity.This assignment will in part be based on your experiences in completing this activity. Make sure that you have completed the activity before attempting to complete the assignment.
Respond to the following components in Week 9 Theory, Bias, and Intersections in Practice tab of the Course Reflective Journal media tool:
Activity Experience (1–2 paragraphs).Describe a personal interpretation of what you experienced in each section of the media activity.Note how personal perceptions, bias, and previous experiences may have shaped the interpretation.
Discuss how you thought and felt as you were working through the various sections of the media piece.
Reflections on Privilege (4–6 paragraphs).Reflect on personal privilege and how it impacts the degree to which you believe your perceptions and values to be “correct.”Think about what privilege you may have within your group, community, and/or society and how that influences your confidence in your perceptions.An example, what if your boss expressed a different perception than yours? How confident would you be in your perception after hearing this?
Reflect on how groups can influence perceptions and social policy development based on their ascribed power.Think about how privileged groups can drive the assumption of certain values and policies based on their position within society.
Think about how the voices of different groups are given more or less priority based on their ascribed power.
Anti-Oppression and Bias (3–5 paragraphs).Explain the importance of understanding and integrating the lived experiences of others to support anti-oppressive practices.Support explanation with real-life examples and reference to relevant and scholarly sources.
Explain how the concepts of implicit and explicit bias were illustrated in the media activity.Support explanation with real-life examples and reference to relevant and scholarly sources.
Once you have completed your journal make sure you export a copy of your reflections using the “Save” button at the bottom of the Week 9 Theory, Bias, and Intersections in Practice tab. Use this saved document to create your content for the Week 9 paper, using APA format, and submit it in the assignment area of the courseroom.
