OBJECTIVE: This is an introductory exercise. We’ll see how symbols not only represent each of us as an individual, but also how we use symbols in our everyday ‘western’ culture – and how these symbols can be interpreted in different ways, depending on our culture, age, and when and where we are in history! Even though this is a fun exercise, it is a good exercise in cross-cultural interpretation!!
Instructions: think of an object – any object – that represents who you are. Examples of what people have shared are: picture of a friend/family member; piece of sentimental jewelry; an electronic device (ie, phone); car; musical instrument; piece of clothing; cooking utensil or pic of food; sporting equipment; award or trophy – really, it can be anything! Please share a picture of it here. Answer the following questions: (1) what is the object? (2) a. What does your object say about you that is ‘obvious’? For example, if your object is a basketball, it says you like basketball. b. What does you object say about you that someone else may not know? For example, the basketball was given to you by your grandfather, who was the biggest influence on you and played in the NBA. (3) What does this object say about the culture and country you live in? If you were from a different country, would you understand what this object is? Would you misinterpret this symbol if you were in a different culture?
