 REPLY TO:
According to Northouse (2021), there are two types of behaviors: directive and supportive. “Directive behaviors help individuals and group members accomplish goals by giving directions, establishing goals and methods of evaluation, setting timelines, defining roles, and showing how the goals are to be achieved. Supportive behaviors help individuals and group members feel comfortable about themselves, their coworkers, and the situation.” There are four distinct leadership styles depending on the need of the employee; many times, all four styles are used simultaneously. In the first style Directing, the employee is eager to work and please but lacks the knowledge of the work at hand. Education is key at this stage, and the highest amount of time is spent orienting to expectations of the job requirements. In the second style Coaching, the employee has some knowledge of the job requirements but the commitment level is lower than the first style employee as they lose some of their self-confidence with new responsibilities. In the third style Supporting, the employee already has a strong set of skills and has autonomy to make decisions in the workplace. The fourth style Delegating, employees are deemed experts in their areas of work and the leader gives them full control of all decisions. Using these four styles of leadership will assist me in maintaining high performing employees. It is my intention to meet with each person every six months to discuss progress individually and set goals for the incoming six months. Any person not meeting these goals will be provided with extra education and placed on a performance improvement plan to facilitate the key skills needed for the current and future goals.

Review the Situational Leadership 2 approach.
Different situations will need different leadership. Situational leadership recognizes that each individual or situation needs a different approach from the leader. There are four distinct leadership categories of directive and supportive leadership (Northouse, 2021). These four categories are: directive (high directive- low supportive), coaching (high directive- high supportive), supporting (high supportive-low directive) and delegating (low supportive- low directive style). The behaviors and direction of the leader and the team will adjust as the needs change.
Explain how and when you would use directing, coaching, supporting, and delegating leadership styles to create high performing leadership teams for your organization.
Directive leadership is best suited for situations where the team needs to clearly understand the goal and how to get there. The leader will provide the most direction and the most oversite.
Coaching leadership is best suited for situations where the team still needs direction of the goals but the leader is able to provide encouragement to the team and work toward their social needs.
Supporting leadership is best suited for situations where the team understands the goals and the leader is able to use supportive actions to help the team find their best skills.
Delegating leadership is best suited for situations where the leader provides the least amount of input and support. This is best suited for teams where team members understand their goals and have the skills needed to get there. These team members generally will have had time and support in the past from other leaders.
