CREATING AN ANNOTATED SUMMARY
An ANNOTATED SUMMARY is a brief evaluation of a research source. It should include how relevant or helpful this resource will be for your research paper. Depending on the nature of your assignment, several of these summaries may be combined into an annotated bibliography. It can also be one stage of the research/writing process, or it may be the entire assignment. Annotations are usually comprised of four or more sentences about a particular source. Writing this is easier that it might appear.
ASSIGNMENT: Please answer the three questions below IN YOUR OWN WORDS regarding your selected SOURCE in order to create your annotated summary. Although you will answer each question separately for this assignment, each answer will form a central part of your annotated summary.
*BE SURE TO INCLUDE A MINIMUM OF THREE AND MAXIMUM OF EIGHT SENTENCES WHEN ANSWERING EACH QUESTION!
SOURCE: Rodriguez, S., & Macias, E. (2023). “Even being a citizen is not a privilege here”: Undocumented Latinx immigrant youth and perceptions of racialized citizenship. Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, 9(1), 21-36.

QUESTION#1: What is your source about? What is the main point?
Pro Tip: Avoid using the first person (words like I, we, you, etc.) in your answer.
QUESTION #2: Why is this source useful or relevant to your research topic? If it is not useful or relevant please explain why!
Pro Tip: Try using the first person (words like I, we, you, etc.) in your answer to make an argument or present an analysis, not an opinion!.
QUESTION #3: (Two Parts!): Please choose one example from your source reading and explain one to four sentences how your selection illustrates the conclusions* or arguments made with your source. How does the author support these conclusions/arguments. How might their conclusions RELATE to your research topic? Be sure to include the full quote of the example you select from your source!
Pro Tip: Another way to understand this question could be, “What argument is the author making?”.
