UTA Esports is pretty new to the scene at the University of Texas at Arlington. With the past few years marked by steady growth and achievement, even hitting the top ten global leaderboard in Smash tournaments, UTA Esports has become a known player in the collegiate gaming scene. The organization quarters itself at the heart of UTA’s rapidly overpopulating campus providing a diverse and dynamic environment, with no lack ofnew students to engage in esports.
The organization’s key characteristics of course include a dedication to fostering the competitive spirit, providing a place for gamers to hone their skills, and building a community around a shared love for gaming, competitive or otherwise. UTA Esports offers games like Overwatch, league, smash, and Rocket League, catering to a diverse range of interests and genres. Being a fan of games myself it’s good to see a mix of both side-scrolling and multi-dimensional fighting games, as well as shooters like Valorant or Overwatch; all are leagues apart when it comes to complexity and the dynamic situations that propagate in PvP (player vs player) games.
A partial reason for the organization’s selection is its head, who is also a staff member at UTA; readily available during convenient hours, which facilitated easy coordination and support for our group’s project. Another reason stems from its nature as an organization that centers around a loved pass time for many and competes at high levels: working closely with its players to ensure a balanced and enriching college experience. It is inspiring to see more representation of hobbies on campus, as it provides ample room for self-discovery, a key component of the college experience.
In the following portion of our report we will go over the methodology utilized in our interview and following analysis.
Overall, UTA Esports already sees itself the bearer of numerous accolades and victories in the collegiate gaming scene. Although there are some marked areas for improvement, the organization has thus far committed itself to giving collegiate gamers a platform to develop their skills. The organization has more than a few possible changes that could be made, as well as a few data points that deserve a more scientific follow up. The main focal point in our research lays in the issue of student benefits, as UTA esports like many other collegiate gaming institutes, lacks any formal tuition assistance or benefits. This places esports as a much neglected group if college organizations, as most other college programs that require extra curricular activity also provide financial assistance in return. Let’s go over some possible studies that could stem from our conversation thus far:
In the interview, a large problem brought up was the lack of benefits afforded to most collegiate gamers. This marks a very critical flaw in the organizations ability to attract students. Most college students aren’t studying for free, and work another job to pay tuition; how can a student afford to expend precious extra curricular hours when so much of it is occupied by work and studying? This is a question that begs for analysis. A study could be conducted monitoring the performance of various e sports teams with and without standard tuition assistance as part of the perks of membership. Stress is an inhibiting factor for any team, and reducing stress in students not only promises a more holistic educational journey, but lightens the load on students enabling more time to hone their skills for the organization. Such an approach would hopefully lead to improved team performance, as well as greater success in future competitions.
Furthermore, studies could be conducted measuring the effectiveness of a more formal esports environment. These studies could show whether or not such an approach leads to improved team dynamics and achievements. As mentioned in our interview, some of the gamers find it hard to really believe in the team when the enviroment is so lackadaisical and non-competitive (on the management side of things). Not only would a more rigorous and competitive environment prepare students for a genuine professional career in E sports, but funding may be more easily secured when there are more metrics to measure organization success other than competitions won.
By implementing these recommendations UTA Esports could not only enrich the college experience for its gamers but also further establish itself as a competitor alongside other collegiate esports programs. Combined with UTAs pre existing drive for excellence in the gaming community, this could position UTA Esports as a model for the future of collegiate gaming communities.
