DISCUSSION CHAP 7: ASSESSING FOR STRENGTHS & WHAT NEEDS, NEED FILLING TO BECOME STRENGTHS
NOTE FROM ME:
I think we all agree that the DISCUSSIONS have been very interesting & highly informative. You can be PROUD of yourselves.
Important to spend time going through the Modules carefully before arriving at the DISCUSSION, instead, possibly of the urge/impulse to jump to the DISCUSSION only.
Each Module/Chapter, has important info re working with people, concepts for SWs/Counselors, Medical and Law Enforcement Professionals etc.
I look forward to reading your postings and if I write comments on your postings, as I’ve mentioned prior, you can see them by going to GRADES and clicking to the right hand side of the square that has the grade points.
Also, hope you watched the video in segment/page 10 (in this module) regarding the Child Welfare Educational Program (CWEP). It explains the partnering of ASU School of Social work & the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS). It’s an excellent opportunity to have your education at ASU paid for by the State of Arizona in return for you working for DCS for each year you accept tuition funding (for your junior and/or senior years). While I provided info on how to reach people at ASU and ASU West School of SW, please feel free to contact me (email, text, phone call) if you want more info or need clarification re this excellent program.
Hope you are each eating well, sleeping well and getting some movement in.

CHAP 7 DISCUSSION:
This week, you are going to be a DCS Social Worker, working with a young boy who has been removed from his mother and placed into a foster home. Your job is finding the strengths & finding the needs to be filled— (as opposed to seeing things from a “problem” perspective) To give you a good grounding, this has all been discussed in this Chapter 7 and the prior Chap 6.
Chapter 7 & the prior Chapter 6 have given attention to the Strength Based Approach.
Also, consider these 3 IMPORTANT SEGMENTS/VIDEOS (in this Module/Chap) regarding what happened to children and working with children:
The Example “Meet Elise” at the bottom of segment/page 4 of this Module
The Video: Of a little girl & her baby brother who are “REMOVED” from their family in segment/page 7 of this Module Re: WHAT IS HELPFUL (& not so helpful) for the young girl who was placed in foster families — segment/page 7
The Video: Working with Youth, with Bobby Lefebre in segment/page 9 of this Module
Our DISCUSSION for Wk 7 Chap 7 BUILDS ON THE INFORMATION IN THIS MODULE AND EXAMPLES & VIDEOS ABOVE and WHAT CAN BE LEARNED, THAT’S IMPORTANT & CAN BE APPLIED TO THE CHILD, ROBERT’S SITUATION BELOW REGARDING:
Empowering Robert– Strengths And Needs Assessment
Meet Robert:
12 years old
Withdrawn
Will not do chores
With a white foster family
Misses Mom
Has a 3 year old baby sister
Fights at school
Two weeks ago Robert was taken from his home & neighborhood when his mother was arrested & jailed for writing bad checks. He was placed in a white foster home. His 3 year old sister is with an aunt. Besides the clothes he wore, he brought only an old guitar. He has little contact with his father who lives in another state.
Robert has been very quiet and shy for the past two weeks. Most of the time he stays in his room. He answers questions with one-word answers. He refuses to look anyone in the eye. He won’t help around the house, even when asked. Robert is very capable of caring for his personal needs. At his new school, he got into a fight when someone asked him about his mother.
Regarding Robert: You are his case manager/social worker/counselor.
From the information provided above:
Answer these 3 questions in your first Original Comment/Posting:
1. At your first meeting with Robert, how might you approach him? What might you first say to him or ask him ?
2. Describe 2 of Robert’s STRENGTHS ?
3. What do you see as the 2 most important NEEDS that Robert has at this time, that need to be FILLED? Might filling these NEEDS empower him?
Optional to answer: Is there other information you think would be important to know?
Remember, there are no rights or wrongs here and you each may or may not present different perspectives. Our eyes are opened by each other.
As always, after your original/initial posting, 2 reply postings to classmates, before midnight Saturday, Mar. 23. Remember, in your 2 reply postings either adding your thoughts to their posting and/or if you agree with their posting, HOW OR WHY you agree.
Look forward to your work. — mao
