Discussion:
After successful creation of the work breakdown structure (WBS), several tools and approaches can be used for scheduling. Please discuss the following:
Provide an example of a project. You may use a project from your own experience or from research you conduct. Then discuss the method(s) used to estimate the duration of the project.
Based on the readings and other resources, identify and evaluate a project scheduling tool (e.g., Gantt chart, CPM, PERT, or network diagram). Also, describe how the tool was or should have been used on the project. Integrate the course readings and support the post with appropriate citations and references.
Critical Thinking: Option #1: Cost Duration Analysis
Download and examine the cost-duration table Download cost-duration tablefrom the link provided in the module. Using the critical path method (CPM), first identify the critical path. Given the critical path, then find three tasks that should be crashed by inserting an X mark in the “Tasks to Crash” column. You need to identify these three tasks by accounting for the critical activities, and based on the low “Cost for Each Day Crashed” values. This value has already been calculated in the attached table for three tasks. You will need to determine this value for the remaining tasks for your analysis.
Use the following outline for section headings:
Identified Tasks
Steps Taken to Identify Tasks
Other Recommendations for Shortening Schedule Duration
You will have two files to submit for your assignment. First, you must submit your completed table with all values filled in and marking which tasks you are going to crash. Second, you will submit a paper discussing the items in the bulleted list above. Your paper should be 1-2 pages in length. Your work should conform to CSU Global Writing Center. Provide support for your statements with in-text citations. Include at least two credible references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU Global Library is a good place to start to find these references.
The CSU Global Library and Writing Center links can be found in the course navigation panel.
Option #2: Schedule Chart Analysis – Presentation
Download and examine the project task list
Download project task listfrom the link provided in the module. Based on this task list, you will create a PERT chart and prepare a presentation file that discusses the following:
Identify which set of tasks create the critical path.
Determine which task would be best to crash (i.e., shorten) the critical path.
Determine if there is a change to the critical path by crashing the task. Is there a new critical path?
What other information would be beneficial to know if the selected task was the best option for crashing?
You will have two files to submit for your assignment. First, you must submit your completed PERT chart. Second, you will submit your presentation file. You are also required to submit detailed speaker’s notes containing a script for presenting each slide. The notes can be embedded in the presentation using the speaker’s notes capability or submitted in a separate Word document. For some tips on making dynamic presentations, view the visual presentations page in the CSU Global Online Research and Writing Center.
Your presentation should be 10-14 slides in length (include a screenshot of the PERT chart on one of the slides). Your work should conform to CSU Global Writing Center. Provide support for your statements with in-text citations. Include at least two credible references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU Global Library is a good place to start to find these references.
