Response 1.) Chris Laping, the CIO of Red Robin developed an IT strategy around his root cause analysis around breaking the silo that IT had created for itself in the organization. The chapter spoke of the need to remove organizational friction. Applying the SWOT analysis methodology is one method of discovering opportunities. Because of the silos, there was poor or nonexistent communication between departments. Laping improved communications between departments by developing a cross-divisional forum where departments regularly discussed what they expected from IT (High, 2014, p. 82).
Lamping also developed an IT vision that focused on the paying customer instead of internal customers. He used quest feedback to gain consumer insight into how the company performed against the mission statement of creating a memorable experience with each bite.
In the article titled, A Leadership of Value in CIO Digest (Virtualization & Right, 2009), Patrick Spencer examines Red Robin’s core values and how that is reflected in the IT strategy. The core values include honor, integrity, continually seeking knowledge, and having fun.
Developing an IT strategy that included processes that delivered customer value ultimately lead to the dissolution of operational silos.

Response 2.) SWOT analysis tends to be generous on strengths and may minimize weaknesses and Threats due to the internal view. TOWS on the other hand forces the participants to take both an Internal Company focus and an External to-market perspective. Matching strategy to opportunities and threats provides the company with a strategy to mitigate risks represented by threats and weaknesses (Ian Johnson, 2012).
The article illustrates how both tools used together create a better strategy. The example of Starbucks provides a hands-on example of how the tool can be applied (TOWS Analysis: A Comprehensive Guide, 2024)
