In chapters 1-6, we are introduced to Frida, a mother who is overwhelmed, exhausted, and frustrated. For those of who may be parents, her experience as a mother may not be unusual, though for readers who are not parents, they may still have empathy for Frida’s lack of direction and support. We learn that Frida leaves her daughter young daughter, Harriet, alone much longer than she anticipated. She was found out when a neighbor called the police to report Harriet’s crying.
Though Frida would be perceived as irresponsible, is it understandable that her distraction at work was connected to her exhaustion and frustration of being the solo parent? This is a question that we may ask as Frida must confront the choices she makes as a mother. After her meeting with police and social services, her life changes when she chooses to undergo training for mothers.
What is your perception of Frida? How do you think any of the characters she engages with contribute or influence her decisions (her decisions can be connected to Harriet or personal decisions such as the outcome of her divorce)?
Include sentence(s) from Chan’s novel to support your ideas.
