Designing intentional STEM experiences that integrate all content areas develops a deeper conceptual understanding for early childhood students. Units that focus on STEM or IBL allow students the opportunity to use 21st century skills and apply engineering skills.
Use the standards from Day 2 of your “STEM Unit Plan Outline” and the “3 Day Unit Plan Template” that you began in Topic 3 to develop the second lesson in your unit. This lesson will integrate IBL with science and engineering.
Day 2 of your unit plan should include the following:
Title of Unit and Brief Summary: Create a title for your lesson and write a brief summary of your lesson based on the selected standards for Day 2. This title and summary can go under the information included for Day 1.
State Learning Standards: From Day 2 of your “STEM Unit Plan Outline.”
Specific Learning Targets/Objectives: Aligned to the selected science and engineering standards.
Academic Language: Key terms for this lesson.
Unit Resources, Materials, Equipment, and Technology needed for this lesson.
Depth of Knowledge Lesson Questions: One developmentally appropriate question for each level of understanding that supports IBL.
Anticipatory Set and Differentiation: Explain how you will introduce the lesson and activate prior knowledge to trigger a student’s curiosity and engagement in the lesson.
Multiple Means of Representation and Differentiation: Explain how you will present the science and engineering content in student-centered ways to engage all learners in investigating the theme/question.
Multiple Means of Engagement and Differentiation: Explain how you will facilitate and guide activities that will allow students to explore, observe, experiment with, and apply the science and engineering content.
Multiple Means of Expression: Describe formative and summative assessment methods that will be used to monitor student progress during the lesson and modify instruction and/or teacher guidance while students engage in the IBL process.
Differentiation: Use knowledge of your field experience class to explain how you will differentiate the lesson for students with and without exceptionalities.
Extension Activity and/or Homework: Create a meaningful extension activity that can be completed in the classroom or at home that will allow students to further explore the objectives and/or theme/question.
Support Day 2 of your unit plan with 1-2 resources.
