Write and submit an essay that uses the Allegory of the Cave (from Plato’s The Republic at the start of Book VII) to explore and explain the proposition that statistics is largely about testing hypotheses, drawing conclusions, and making statements about the real world.
To earn credit with this assignment, the submitted essay must be well-written, original, cleanly presented, and completely address the required themes. The essay should be mostly about statistics, a bit about engineering, and a tiny piece of book report about The Republic. It should be engagingly written at a serious junior undergraduate academic level.
The zero points for this assignment is because it is optional. Up to 200 points will be added to the Homework assignment group based on the quality of the essay submitted. The quality of your essay matters much more than its quantitative length, but — as a general guide — the most successful submissions to this assignment in the past have ranged from about 1,500 up to about 2,000 words.
