Assignment Description
You will analyze the archetype, ritual, or trope using images of your choice from media texts
of your choice. The focus should be on the transformation of the character or the representation
of the transformation itself (the ritual or trope).Your analysis should make an argument about how the media/film/TV series visually and cinematically
represents the character/ritual/trope visually and cinematically. In other words, you’re not just analyzing
the narrative or the character but conducting a close textual analysis of the images. This means you are
taking into consideration the bodies on screen, the location of the action, how lighting, sound, color,
frame composition, shot compositions, body movements, camera angles and movements, props,
costumes, makeup, background, facial expressions, and other production/editing techniques work.
Think critically and carefully about your media selections and images – they should not be random. Still,
instead, you should selectively choose examples that are relevant to your analysis and will strengthen
your argumentRequirements
1. Choose 1 trope, archetype, or narrative device frequently portrayed in Teen Media
2. Choose 5 films or series to compare
A. At least 1 must be assigned film/TV from class
B. At least 1 must be analyzed in at least one of your assigned course readings
C. The other 3 films/series can be your choice
3. Minimum 2 images per film/series
Format
This is not a production course; therefore, you are NOT being evaluated on editing skills. You can do
this using PowerPoint to insert your images and record the audio directly into your presentation;
however, if you would prefer to use Adobe Premiere, iMovie, Final Cut Pro X or another video editing
software you may choose to do that so long as you follow the requirements outlined above.
