In the first unit of the course, we have spent considerable time understanding w

In the first unit of the course, we have spent considerable time understanding what White supremacy is, why it created the category of race, the development of Latinidad as an ethnoracial category, the shifting mechanics of White supremacy under changing demographics, development of Latinx/Hispanic identity, and finally the ways Latinx people have participated in anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism. Based on the information provided to you in lecture, through the assigned readings, and by your own independent research, you must write a five-page essay responding to one of the following prompts. You are asked to demonstrate, through the writing of this essay, your understanding of the concepts and information from lecture and assigned readings, your ability to use and apply these ideas and information to analyze an issue and form an argument and present it, and where necessary, search for necessary additional information not provided to you in lecture or the readings to develop an answer to your chosen prompt. You do NOT need to respond to all these prompts, CHOOSE ONE and develop an essay response to the question(s) being asked of you. The following are your choices for an essay prompt: Using the concepts of racial project, racialization, ethnorace, and racial formation, explain the development of Latinidad under White supremacy. As a system, why did White supremacy need to represent Latin America and its people as non-White? Why was Latinidad created as a pan- ethnic ethnoracial category; what purpose does it serve under White supremacy? How does White supremacy, as a system of domination, position Latinxs in relationship to other ethnoracial groups? How has dominant U.S. culture come to define Latinx identity? What are the rules or criteria White supremacy has created in the U.S. about who is and is not Latinx? Identify at least two ways/examples of how dominant U.S. culture utilizes stereotypes to define what and who is Latinx. What are these stereotypes trying to say about Latinx people? Identify at least two ways/examples Latinx people, activists, and artists have pushed back against these dominant depictions of Latinx identity, people, and communities? How have Latinx people internalized White supremacy? What role does anti-Black and anti- Indigenous racism play in Latinx people and communities internalizing White supremacy? Identify at least three examples of how Latinx people have internalized White supremacist beliefs and practices? What effect does anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism have on the broader Latinx community? Although you will use these questions and answer them in your essay, it is critically important that your paper include an appropriate thesis statement and transition sentences that link each paragraph. You should not write paragraph responses to each of the questions and just stick them together. Remember, your thesis statement is a sentence at the beginning of your essay (though not necessarily the first sentence) that answers the main question in a short, concise, and argumentative way; that is, your thesis takes a position/makes a claim you will explore throughout. The prompts cover three themes, depending on which prompt you choose you will be making an argument about White supremacy and the development of ethnoracial categories, the development and conflict over Latinx identity, or internalized racism and Latinx people and communities. Make sure you don’t lose sight of the fact that your essay must provide a cohesive response that has a central argument and is then supported by your subpoints and demonstrated evidence. The basic requirements for the essay are as follows: • Citations, both in-text and in the works cited list at the end of your essay, need to follow APA standards and rules. You must cite AT LEAST TWO academic sources of information (e.g. book, article, book chapter) that are not the assigned readings or class lecture. When using information from the readings or lecture, make sure you are citing appropriately. Length: 5 pages maximum, 4.25 pages minimum; your works cited list does not count towards the length requirement. Font: Times New Roman Size: 12 Margins: 1-inch margins all the way around Double-spaced lines; do not put extra spaces between paragraphs, it is already sufficient because f the double space, but do make sure to indent the first line of the paragraph in order to distinguish one paragraph from the other.
