Integrating reading with other content areas like math, science, and/or social studies is a way to show students how the content areas are connected and help students apply reading skills across content areas. Integration often requires the teacher to identify a standard from both content areas and develop a lesson that assesses both standards.
For this assignment, create a cross-curricular lesson plan for the students in your field experience classroom based on your discussion with your 2nd grade mentor English teacher in Clinical Field Experience A.
Using the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” identify a minimum of one state literacy standard and one cross-curricular content standard for the literacy skills and topics you discussed with your mentor teacher. Your lesson plan should provide students with opportunities to develop content specific vocabulary and practice reading fluency and comprehension skills.
Beneath the lesson plan template, write a 250 word reflection on the role of fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills in reading development. How does integrating other content areas into literacy support the development of fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills?
