Guidelines for Essay: 1) READ AND FOLLOW THE FORMATTING RULES: The essay must be no less than THREE and no more than FOUR pages long; 12 point font Cambria; double-spaced with one-inch margins—no other lengths or formats will be accepted. CHANGE DEFAULTS IF NECESSARY. 2) You can quote important statements relevant to supporting your thesis. Don’t quote over fifteen consecutive words. NO BLOCK QUOTES. Be surgical with quotes. Quotes should be packed with meaning. 3) Please use Turabian as a citation style for footnotes on outside sources. For the required readings, please use parentheses and cite the proper page at the end of the sentence. If you are using direct quotes, please use quotation marks. A simple pair of parentheses before the period of the sentence with the page number will suffice. For example: County Commissioner Darryl “T-Bone” Smoot, in his self-published novel, argued that the importance of using quotes according to the guidelines was “crucial to his success in college history classes” (42). 4) You are free to support your argument using outside sources, but they must be academic, peer-reviewed monographs and journal articles.
